The Feast of Sant’Andrea in Amalfi: a blend of traditions and spirituality.

Tuesday, 26 June 2018

Amalfi is one of the primary destinations on the Amalfi Coast. It is also one of the main hubs for travel along the Coast that you can discover as you #goboating on our Travelmar routes.

Amalfi is the perfect spot to visit for a day. Lose yourself among its meandering streets, enjoy the scents of limoncello liqueur wafting out from every shop, discover the history of the Paper Museum (Museo della Carta), revisit the events of the Maritime Republic or simply admire its lush landscape and beautiful monuments.

A favourite tradition for visitors to Amalfi is to take a picture of the entire Cathedral: this is not so easy, considering the building’s height and the narrow streets. In fact, if you do manage it, please share your snapshot on our Facebook page!

The Cathedral is consecrated to Sant’Andrea (Saint Andrew), Patron Saint and protector of Amalfi. The story goes that in June 1544 the holy Apostle provoked a storm that completely destroyed the fleet of the Saracen pirates trying to conquer Amalfi.

On the 27th of June, Amalfi celebrates its Patron Saint. This is a very cherished and beloved summer Feast day where spirituality, folklore and popular traditions come together. The most awaited and beloved tradition is the running of the statue of Sant’Andrea up the stairs of the Cathedral. When the statue of Sant’Andrea returns to the Cathedral after the procession, the bearers run up the majestic staircase while the crowd cheers them on from the square. Once at the top, a long, deeply felt applause erupts from the crowd and all the tension disappears.

Amalfi is a city you must visit, and the Feast of Sant’Andrea is an event you should not miss. If you want to join it this coming 27th of June, just #goboating with us: book your ticket online and choose the timetable that most suits you. For the occasion, we have planned additional routes: leave from Salerno at 5:10 pm, 6:30 pm or 8:00 pm and easily make your return later that night by leaving Amalfi at midnight, right after the fireworks. We’ll be waiting for you!
