The Feast of Sant’Andrea in Amalfi: a blend of traditions and spirituality.

The Cathedral is consecrated to Sant’Andrea (Saint Andrew), Patron Saint and protector of Amalfi. The story goes that in June 1544 the holy Apostle provoked a storm that completely destroyed the fleet of the Saracen pirates trying to conquer Amalfi.

On the 27th of June, Amalfi celebrates its Patron Saint. This is a very cherished and beloved summer Feast day where spirituality, folklore and popular traditions come together. The most awaited and beloved tradition is the running of the statue of Sant’Andrea up the stairs of the Cathedral. When the statue of Sant’Andrea returns to the Cathedral after the procession, the bearers run up the majestic staircase while the crowd cheers them on from the square. Once at the top, a long, deeply felt applause erupts from the crowd and all the tension disappears.

Amalfi is a city you must visit, and the Feast of Sant’Andrea is an event you should not miss.
